HILO SAMPAN -
Beginning in the 1930s, and up through the early
70s, the Sampan Bus, also known as the Nickel
Ride because of its five cent fare, would take
you practically anywhere around downtown Hilo
that you wanted to go, said Matt Daog of Pearl
City, and creator of Hawaii Streetrod patches.
Daog, Rickard, and
friend, Ken Yoshimura, are looking for pictures,
articles, and any additional history you might
have about the Sampan Buses for an upcoming
project. These are historical vehicles from a
by-gone era, said Daog.
If you have any information on these types of
vehicles, they would like to hear from you.
