I use Google Analytics to see how many
visitors Honolulu Streets Magazine gets per month. It’s kinda like a
hit counter that comes with more information than you’ll ever
actually need but it helps me to find out what folks are looking for
and which page is the most popular in Honolulu Streets. It also
shows which websites are linking to me and how many of my visitors
are coming from them.
A lot of the information I just toss
aside because I honestly don’t understand it but the other day I
noticed a very interesting website linking to Honolulu Streets
Magazine. Turns out, it’s a group of guys from Hawaii who live in
the Washington State area that formed a Volkswagen club called
Kahiko Kula - translated it means Old School in Hawaiian.
Leroy Tagavilla is the founder and
club president of Kahiko Kula. He’s from the Big Island living in
Olympia, Washington. To date, the Kahiko Kula VW club has over 20
members who are located around the Pacific Northwest leading all the
way back to Hawaii. Most of their cars are '57 to '67 fully restored
Type 1 VW Beatles to complete custom jobs. But they’ll make friends
with anyone regardless of what kind of car they have.
If you’re from Hawaii, and really are
the old school type, what will give you chicken skin for sure is
when you click the enter button on Kahiko Kula’s website. Once you
do, you’ll automatically get hit with rich local tunes - some from
an era gone by such as, Kalapana’s Naturally, It's Aloha Friday and
John Cruz’s Island Style. But that’s only the beginning. There’s a
short bio about each Kahiko Kula’s member and photos that make their
website and club beam with local flavor.
The club got its start a couple of
years ago when Leroy and some of his buddy’s got together and
decided to form their own little bunch to visit local car shows in
the Pacific Northwest area. Funny thing was, every time they went to
a show they’d attract more local transplants who share the same
interest and drive that they do and their members just kept growing
from there.
Some of Kahiko Kula’s Ohana include:
• Club President: Leroy Tagavilla
• Kalani Cabral - Kaneohe now lives in
Bellevue WA.
• Mark Souza - Kapahulu, living in
Lake Stevens, WA.
• Guam Boy- Island of Guam residing in
Port Orchard, WA.
• Lane Lunasco - Waialua, (Oahu) moved
to Washington.
• Doug Hubin - born and raised on
Oahu, now living in Portland, OR.
• Kimo, Mikey and M.C Gamble
Well guys, thanks for the link but
more importantly, mahalo for spreading the kahiko kula aloha and a
little of the
island culture around the Pacific Northwest.
Aloha
a Hui Hou,
If it happened on the streets of Hawaii,
you just might hear it first in Honolulu Streets.
