Hang on motorsports fans, less than a
month to go until NASCAR and the NHRA roll back out onto speedways
and dragstrips from Daytona to Pomona. By early February our TV
screens will start supplying us national drag racing and stockcar
racing for the 2010 season. On February 14th we get the doubleheader
of both the Daytona 500 and Pomona Winternationals to fill up our
Sunday.
Locally we’ll see most of our clubs
kicking off 2010 with ‘test n’ tune’ or ‘warm-up’ events in January
and points events starting in February. The racing season begins
anew! Most of the Big Island clubs have websites and you can find
their link buttons on the left in Hawai'i Motorbeat. Here’s a list as well...
Big Island Auto Club, monthly
IHRA drag racing.

Big Island SCCA, Monthly Solo

808 MX/ATV Association, monthly

Big Island Hot Rod Association,
monthly Hilo outlaw drag events.
No website.

Hilo Motor Speedway Assoc,
monthly Hilo 1/4 mile dirt track events.

Yes, all these activities happen at
the Hilo motorsport facility,
our only county park with a quartermile drag strip, motocross
track, dirt oval track and a newly improved paved track that is used
by both karters & SCCA drivers.
During the ‘down-time’ between the ‘09
and ‘10 season the two clubs got together to design and create some
track improvements that will result in faster and safer racing for
karts and sports cars. See the photos below. Another example
of how the racers themselves have created most of the venues at the
Hilo county park ~ from the MX courses, to the dirt oval track and
kart/Solo track.
And its just a leisurely 200 mile round trip for West Hawaii
enthusiasts to get there and enjoy it.
2010 may be the year that we start beating the drum again for the
Kona Motorsport Park. If we can just get the County to secure the
250 acres and get us access to it from Queen Ka‘ahumanu Hwy I think
our West Hawai‘i club folks could get some tracks built.

By adding a County Parks Dept baseyard at the KMP site we may get
access, water and power and other amenities sooner rather than
later. Seems like a great new year’s resolution to me. Let’s see if
the Mayor agrees!
Happy New Year ~ PM
