HOLUALOA
HI. — Hawaii Motorbeat, the monthly column that began last
September in the Big Island's 808 Classified tabloid newspaper, has
slowly but surely been expanding its web-based version to include
info from all the Islands. With the February 2009 edition there are
now links to a few Oahu clubs and more photos of neighbor isle rides
and events will be featured in editions to come.
Produced each month by Hawaii motorsports veteran Paul Maddox, the on-line Motorbeat jumped to its
new multi page format in January. Along with "The Top 20 Race Photos
of 2008" and other expanded features, the 2009 version of Motorbeat
debuted club 'contact' buttons along it's left column. All clubs are
invited to send in their logo and web address for a link to their
sites.
"In my monthly 808 Classifieds column
I'm limited to a half page for copy and a couple photos", said
Maddox, "But with the website I can easily add more photos and
features". The other advantage to an on-line publication is the
clarity of photos versus newsprint. Big, bright photos of racers,
events and feature cars are standard.
Maddox began covering Oahu racing in
1967 with the twice-monthly tabloid Hawaii Racing News. Initially
covering just events at Jimmy Pflueger's newly opened Hawaii Raceway
Park, the tabloid racing paper grew to also feature the fast rising
sport of "Scrambles" - which became Motocross - powerboat races, karting and sports car events. From 1968 through 1976 he also
produced the annual South Pacific Championship Rod & Custom Shows at
what is now the Neil Blaisdell Exhibition Hall.
In 1993, after an 11 year stint as
Creative Director at Crazy Shirts, Maddox and wife Susan 'retired'
to the upcountry village of Holualoa, overlooking Kailua-Kona on the
Big Island, where he was soon involved with the Hawaii Racing
Association and their crusade to create the Kona Motorsport Park.

They just might show up in next month's Hawaii Motorbeat Monthly.
